Business Hours |
| |
| Most of the businesses in Huatulco
open from 9am to 7pm but some professionals close between
2pm and and 4pm. Professionals, Banks and some shops in the
resort will close on Sunday. Banks open all day on Saturday. |

Cameras & Film |
| |
| 35mm camera film is sold all over Huatulco, however the
prices vary. At the moment it is easy to have a film developed
in to photographs but as yet no company is processing film
on to CD. You can down take in digital memory cards and have
them downloaded on to disk. Even though there are many Internet
access shops we are still trying to find one that has a selection
of drivers so you can download straight from your digital
camera & email home. Please remember to ask permission
before taking a photograph of a person. Some of the older
Indians will be very upset and will probably not give you
permission. The church is happy for you to take pictures but
not during services and no flash. |

Currency |
| |
| The Mexican currency is the Peso. The Peso divides in to
100 Centavos. Notes come in denominations of 20, 50, 100,
200, 500 & 1,000 Pesos. Coins come in denominations of
1, 2, 5 10 & 20 Pesos, and 20 and 50 Centavos. There seems
to always be a small change problem in Mexico and Huatulco
is no different. One of the phrases you will hear most is
“No cambio” (No change). Try and build up a collection
of small notes & change to use when buying from small
shops & street vendors. However, the busy restaurants
are always asking customers for change. If you don’t
have any don’t worry they will find some! Most larger
businesses will take US dollars. The rate is usually on show
near the cash desk. The rate changes daily so don’t
change all your money at once. Mexico is still the land of
cash and even though most large businesses will take credit
cards it’s a good idea to check first. |

Customs & Excise |
You are allowed to bring into Mexico:
2 X Cartons of Cigarettes or 50 X Cigars, 1kg of Smoking Tobacco.
2 X Litres of Wine OR Hard Liquor.
12 Rolls of Film.
1 X Lap Top Computer
Camera Equipment
Sports Equipment
The Mexican custom officials are very tolerant. They are mainly
looking for illegal drugs and guns. You can bring petty much
anything that could feasibly be used during your stay. Customs
are after goods that look as if their meant to be resold in
Mexico. |

Drug Laws |
|
The rules are very simple. Mexico does not tolerate drug
use or drug dealing. The minimum sentence for getting caught
in possession of anything more than the smallest amount
of any narcotic, including marijuana & amphetamines,
is 10 years in jail. They will leave you sweat in jail for
up to a year before your trial will be heard. Mexico operates
Napoleonic Law – guilty until proven innocent. You
do not want to see the inside of a Mexican prison!
Huatulco is a family Eco resort that does not attract the
all night drug party crowd. Drugs are not used in public
and most of the locals have no use for them. |

Drug Stores / Pharmacies |
| |
| You can buy just about any drug over the counter, with or
without a prescription. We recommend that if you are taking
a new drug to seek the advice of a doctor. The people who
work in the drug stores/pharmacies are NOT pharmacists. They
may have been selling T-shirts only yesterday. If you can
bring all the medication you normally use with you from home. |

Electricity |
| |
The Mexican electric system is 110 volts AC (60 cycles),
the same as the USA & Canada. Many hotels still have outlets
for only two-prong plugs - bring an adapter.
The electric system in Huatulco is a fairy new setup and has
very few blowouts. Occasionally the electricity will die during
a thunderstorm but is back up & running very quickly.(great!
You get to see the stars more clearly ).The main hotels have
their own generators. |

Language |
| |
| Spanish is the language of Mexico in all it's dialects.
The locals mix spanish with Chontal, Zapoteca and some Mayan
words. Try and learn some basic spanish for your trip. In
doing so you will open up a great fun world. The locals are
very easy going and happy to listen to broken spanish &
have a chat. They do not ridicule but encourage your attemps.
Best to all laugh together! |

| •
Liquor Laws |
| |
| Drinking age is 18. You can buy all the booze you can think
of in shops and supermarkets 24 hours a day. It's not a good
idea to be wandering in the streets of Huatulco blind drunk
as you could end up in jail. The locals tend to get drunk
in Cantinas & at home. During elections there can be a
"dry period" where no alcohol is sold for up to
72 hours!!! This applies to tourists. |
