Cerveza: The beers of Mexico

Kevin Hunneybell, Huatulco. August 2005 (89° in the shade).

Yorkshire in the north of England is a mecca for beer drinkers with many independant breweries and some of the best beers served in a good old Brisitsh pub. It was there that I learned my trade with some of the best.

There are three beers in the world which really can be heaven in a glass; one is 'Negra Modelo' that classic cream of cervezas, dark and full flavoured and brewed to high standards, Negra Modelo is a class act. Served cold as hell with a dish of cacahuates (spicy peanuts), it brings your body back to its senses through the long hot summer months. Mexican beers are brewed to a surprisingly high standard, so throw that 'Budweiser' away and discover a real taste.

There are many beers available here in Huatulco; beers are also known as 'chelas' locally.

From the Modelo brewery come Corona (light), Victoria (good body), Pacifico (another medium bodies beer), Leon (full bodied), Negra Modelo (the Queen of cervezas), Modelo Especial (light and expensive - go for a Corona) , Modelo (in tins only, slightly more body than Corona).

From Montezuma come XX (dos equis) clara (light), XX (dos equis) Ambar (full taste, though not as full as Negra Modelo), Indio (medium bodied, great with tacos), Bohemia (full bodied and a worthy rival to Negra Modelo).

All this talk of beer has just remineded me to go to our freezer and take out a bottle of Negra. Ahh ... that's better. Many a wonderful evening can be had with a` cold Mexican beer so I will say "salud" and good health to you all

Oh and the other two beers? 'Copper Dragon' an independant from Skipton in Yorkshire and 'Velvet' from Prague in The Czeck Republic.

Which is THE best? Let me just check another Negra Modelo ... hmm.

The 'Queen of beers' arrives at 'Casa Blanca'.
